Tammy DuckworthDuckworth, an Army Major who lost her legs in Iraq, ran against Peter Roskam for the seat of retiring Congressman Henry Hyde. Roskam ran his campaign on an enforcement only platform; his anti-immigration rhetoric accused Ms. Duckworth of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants. Roskam and his funders won by spending an estimated $10 million on the race, running three separate anti-immigrant smear ads.
David Mejias Mejias ran against anti-immigrant Congressman Peter King. Last year, King proposed that people of Middle Eastern and South Asian descent should go through additional security checks. In what was once a safe seat, King now knows his extremist views are out of touch with his common-sense, progressive district. King was only able to hold the seat by outspending Mejias two to one.
